Does visiting a hacked site make my computer vulnerable?

August 31st, 2008 · 5 Comments

I was trying to visit a recipe site and when I logged on, it gave me one page saying that the site has been hacked. Will this make my computer vulnerable? How do I know if my computer was hacked as a result of visiting this site? Or does that happen often? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

P.S. I’m only running AVG on my computer.
I've ran an AVG scan and it only warned me about some tracking cookies, no malware or viruses. Is this a good bet that my computer should be safe? I have recently updated my computer with xp service pack 3 (most recent updates) and my AVG is fully updated.

Thanks again!

Yes it does, they are usually run so people can get into your computer. Your best bet is to stay out of them.

Yes, there’s a possibility you could be infected with something. So why take the chance?

The idea is to *avoid* sites that could cause problems. There are a bazillion recipe sites on the Internet. Pick another.

If you’re worried about your system, do a scan. Make sure your AV is up-to-date first.

Is that AVG warning you? You should be fine, I think. You can also download and install McAfee Site Adviser which scans pages for threats.
Use a firewall. Comodo is free.

Its possible for the PC to be infected
Always Keep your AntiVirus up to date
and also keep the Operating System Updated
if you need a firewall there is Comodo Firewall
      - http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
(if you are using windows firewall turn it off and install comodo firewall)
