I have Vista Premium 64 bit right now. I use my computer mainly for recording. I have 4 gigs of ram that i guess only vista premium 64 bit can read. A lot of my programs and plug-ins for recording aren't compatible with 64 bit vista. If I get Windows XP, will my computer still run on 4 gigs of ram and just say it has less? or will it not work with the computer?
Also…My new HP Computer didn't come with a drivers CD. So if I get XP will I have nothing on my computer when I install it? Will I have to install a ton of drivers from the internet?
I want to use all of my gigs of RAM. It's a brand new computer that I just bought for recording. I need my computer to go fast with recording. It's a brand new HP that came with Vista already on it.

XP and VISTA (any 32 bit OS) will only be able to access at most 3.3-3.5 gigs of memory due to OS limitations.

Your computer *may* be compatible with XP. The best way I have found to figure this out is to go the the downloads page for your computer and see if there are XP drivers listed. If so, the computer was intended for XP also and you'll be able to do it. If not, it is doubtful.
The second part is the RAM. Windows 32 bit can see about 3.5 GB of RAM. So, most of the memory you paid for will work.
At worst, if you buy XP and it fails, you could always go back to Vista with your re installation disks.

One of my computers would not operate with more than 2 GB of RAM in it, even though the motherboard said it could handle more and the tech at the computer store said that anything "over" what the computer could handle would just be "unused". (It was all the same type of memory, too, so it wasn't that the memory was incompatible).
You may have to pull 2GB out (you either have 4 1s or 2 2s, right?)
