Downloaded freeware from cnet and then a $5 program stopped working and when I open it my antivirus said it?

blocked a virus threat. Earlier on it said it quaranteened pak_generic and there is no fix for it. It was only the one program that got affected and every time I opened it the antivirus comes up.

Uninstalled that freeware that didn't help and nothing I tried helped. Later installed that same free program from a different source and now all programs work fine and there are no messages from my antivirus/antispyware.

What do you think happened
