Even though our security system says we have no threats on our computer, we are clearly having problems?

June 29th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Letters randomly get skipped when we are typing, tons of pop ups, etc. Norton says we have no problems, Windows Defender says no problems, but we definitely have problems. My husband is taking an online class right now, so it is imperative that our computer is working well. Any suggestions?

Ditch Norton and Windows Defender. They are worthless.

Good antiviruses: either AVG or Avast! (yes, the exclamation mark is part of the name). Pick one; you can't use both.

Good spyware removers: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and SpywareBlaster (use all 3)

      Good disk cleaner: CCleaner

All of these are completely free and, in my opinion, they are essential. Unlike in real life, with software, you don't necessarily get what you pay for! ;-) Once you use them you will notice a big difference in your system's performance.

If all else fails, reinstall your operating system and start over fresh.

You should try a scan in safe mode that way a virus could be
eliminated before its enabled. They sometimes are programmed to enable at start up.Try that maybe need to reinstall certain files as they could be corrupt hindering usage.

I personally use AVG Free, and my computer runs great. Like those above, I am not a big fan of Norton nor Windows Defender; you may also try Spybot Search & Destroy. AVG is updated almost daily, and has options for running a scan on a schedule. Plus, it's all FREE.
Depending on what exactly is going on, you may also need some more RAM (memory), and may need to defragment you hard rive (Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter). Good luck!

Ditch Norton and Windows Defender and try a different free program such as AVG (has Quickscan) or Spybot S&D (Lots of features eg. Registry confliction scan, system changes monitor)
Hijack This can also be used however it is much more technical and you may want to seek help before using it on a forum or a support website.

If none of this works you can try a program called ComboFix however it can kill your computer

It sounds like you have a spyware problem. Spyware is different than viruses, Trojans, etc., and antivirus software usually can't deal with it.

What you need is to run an anti-spyware program. Try this one: http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
