Encryption means turning the data into something that doesn’t reveal information to anyone who doesn’t know how to decrypt it.

Since there are so many different ways of encrypting (and decrypting), there’s no one explanation that would suffice. (There are even ways of encrypting data in a way that it can’t be decrypted.)
