I recently dumped Norton on my Compaq and replaced it with Avira Antivirus and a free PC Firewall. Nothing but trouble now. Any suggestions for antivirus and firewall I can download free that actually work? Norton was making everything slow, but now it's chaos. Please advise. And thanks in advance.
Malcolm

Both of these programs work fine. I use them together with Spyware Terminator. If you are getting lots of things asking you to allow them to do something, tick the remember this answer box and click OK. If you are installing or launching a program for the first time and comodo is alerting you, tick the 'treat as (installer or updater)' and then press OK. It will not alert you (much) thereafter until you switch back into normal mode.

You can download a free trial version of Windows Live Onecare. It is good for 100 days. That will give you time to search for another program. Note: any free systems are not worth the bytes it takes to download them. Who knows, maybe you will like Live Onecare and decide to keep it. You get what you pay for.

Many of the answers here have highlights of a particular antivirus or firewall software. What I feel is, everyone have a personal choice for an antivirus or firewall software, but the most popular cannot be said to be the best protection.
If you're looking into the quality of antivirus, I advise you go to sites like AV-Test.org, where the most reliable tests are made to see if many commercial antivirus products work. Let me advise you though: free antivirus (known ones are AntiVir, AVG and Avast!) are not as effective as the paid ones. Look at the link below for links found in relation to the latest antivirus tests by AV-Test.org. In the meantime try researching for more results from other sources.
Now turning into firewalls, there are a couple of free ones that work pretty well. Comodo is rather intrusive in terms of their pop-ups, but by far I hear Online Armor's firewall have been rated the best firewall of 2008. They have the free version though. In any case, look at other firewall softwares like Zone Alarm and more, you may be able to find the one that suits you.
Lastly, in terms of the general point of view of computer security, I'm sending you a useful tip that I know people (inclduing me) tend to forget. It's from BitDefender, but it do come in handy.
Hope this helps! Do a bit of research on antivirus and firewall products, and you'll be rewarded with the one you like best.
