Fix a USER32.dll Error?

I have a dell and run Windows XP the other day I downloaded Microsoft’s sp3 update–I think it was sp3 it may have been sp2 and I also re-enabled microsoft automatic updates. Well I did that continued some work and shut it down. Next morning instead of restarting it gets to what should be my log in screen and says "Unable to locate USER32.dll" THen theres stop c0000135. I have tried restoring to a previous configuration and starting in safe mode– i get no where with either of those. I have the Windows disk with me. I want to avoid at all cost losing a couple of files of pictures that I had not yet backed up. Does anyone have any suggestions?
