my laptop will no longer load past the error message even if i try safemode it will go right back to the error message. My other pc is starting to show this error message but sometimes will load. I tried running a reg fix program but that didnt do anything. Is this some sort of new virus because my virus cleaner didnt pick it up either. I read that Hal.dll errors are common on xp, but to have two seperate computers do it in a 24 hour period is weird.

I would suggest you do a repair install of XP - This will only restore windows files leaving the rest of your files intact - you will lose no data.
Boot from you XP disk and then wait until it gets the the screen saying enter to install OS - now press enter to install and then select repair install.
This should resolve your problem - the reason I do no address this specific error is that this is probably only one of many problems…
