Once the HAL file is corrupted you are forced to reinstall the operating system. The HAL is the Hardware Abstraction Layer and is critical to system operation.
Sorry - You will definitely have to reinstall the operating system.

There is a way to do this without reinstalling the operating system. What you need to do is go into the recovery console. To do this reboot with your windows XP installation cd, press enter then press R to enter the recovery console. Then you press 1 then press enter. Then enter your administrator password then press enter. (If you don’t have an administrator password enter it blank. Then type expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ C:\windows\system32 and the problem should be fixed. If this does not fix it then check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvMkt9fkHCI
If that does not work then go do the factory reinstall
