have you tried restoring the defaults in the bios setup? He may have just changed a critical setting if you said he was fiddling with the f10 menu. Best of luck don’t give up hope!

Go back into your BIOS (F10) and on the last page of it, load the defaults, to make sure you undo anything he might have done.
If you have a Windows XP CD, you can boot to it. At the first prompt, hit enter for wanting to continue to set up XP on this machine. At the next prompt, hit R to repair. It will then proceed to reinstall Windows XP without erasing your old version.

this sometimes happens to my PC.To get in keep try to get in safe mode for about 1 hour.If you get in use the program that brings you computer settings back in time. When you enter safe mode it will ask you if you want to restore it to a certain time, click yes.Pick a date far away when this happened and wait and wait then it will work.If it does not let your computer on over night when you hear the beeping stop it might have fixed it self.It worked for me.

Yes your best option is recovery disc. And do not worry about losing your files. There should be a option on the recovery where you can pick Non-Destructive or non hurtful.
It’ll keep your files in a folder probably called C:/My Backup or something after the recovery,
Hope I help.
Its not your brothers fault. He didnt mean to now did he?

Ah family where would we be without them . I trust your bros dead for messing . You can try removing the CMOS battery The data in CMOS includes
system setup information such as system password, date, time, and system
setup parameters. and will set everything back to the default settings . Usually 5 mins . If you feel comfortable messing with that. Otherwise its a complete system recovery restore with a CD .
