considering the current situation having a antivirus alone will not help

Download the ESET NOD 32 for both antispyware and antivirus
Also for extra protection download AD Aware from Lavasoft website
They are the best U willl get around for free

ANTIVIRUS (USE ONLY ONE ANTIVIRUS)
There are 3 good ones: Avast, Antivir and avg, and another one in the rising is Comodo.
I used avg but with the problems related to version 8, I check the other 2 (Antivir and Avast) and I prefer Avast:
• Avast at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html (you would have to register in the future, but its really good)
• COMODO at http://antivirus.comodo.com/
FYI: AVG was a excellent antivirus, but with version 8 too many problems, and the avg's users are changing to avast. Check the forum of these products.
SPYWARE
there are 2 types of spyware software: realtime detection/blocking and after the fact scanner/remover.
1.- After fact scanner/remover, use this 2 software:
• Spybot Search And Destroy at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html
• Ad-Aware 2008 free at http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
2.- Realtime blocking/detection , use ONLY ONE of this products
• Comodo BOClean : Anti-Malware at http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html
• Spyware Terminator at http://www.spywareterminator.com/
You would also need:
1.- A file/cookie/index.dat cleaner
• CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/
2.- If you are using Microsoft firewall download zonealarm or comodo firewall, disable microsoft firewall and install the new firewall. You should use ONLY ONE FIREWALL
• Comodo Firewall Pro at http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
• zonealarm at http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/znalm/comparison.jsp
3.- Use Firefox instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
