Hi I have McAfee Internet Security and just today the icon in the system tray for updating was taking forever. So I clicked on the security status and it turned red, with everything saying that I am not protected and that action is required for every single thing. When I click fix, it says that it can't be fixed because one or more problems require my response. In the box that says your problems, it says that some of the components are missing, and to please reinstall McAfee Security Center. So I tried using the McAfee Virtual Technician, and it said that it encountered a fatal error (the technition that is) and 2 seconds later a popup from McAfee comes up saying that it blocked the Puper trojan. I assumed that it was a false positive and checked quarantine (restore). In it there were over 10 viruses which McAfee claimed to be trojans and they were all from today. Looking at them, 4 are .dll from System32 and 3 are .dll from Firefox. All the others were McAfee files. So I restored everything, confident that these were false positives. After restoring the files, McAfee turned green and said that I was protected. After this I updated to see what was wrong, and sure enough McAfee prevented all updates and flagged all of them as trojans and now the security is red again. Does anyone have any idea how to either fix the problem, know why this is happening or know wtf caused this stuff? And please don't say remove McAfee and get a free one, because I'm going to get Avira in 6 months when this runs out. So basically its quarantining its own files and destroying itself, plus firefox, and I fear that it might cause a BSOD if it is removing system files. Could it possibly be a terrible update patch?

It may be a missing or failing patch, but anyway you can always try to perform an online virus scan before things get any worse, so to be sure that there are no threats messing up with the system. ESET is a good choice for this task.

If McAfee was working before, you may want to first try a system restore on you computer to return it to a point in time in which it was functioning. If this works, update the program and run a full scan. Also, go to google pack http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html and downloand Norton's On Demand virus scanner and Spyware Doctor. Running these programs are like getting a second opinion from another program to make sure as much of the bad stuff are removed as possible. This Norton program is not a resource hound at all and is quite fast. It scanned my computer in 20 minutes. Another good program to have is Malwarebytes anti malware. You can download this at filehippo.com Worst comes to worse, remove the program and reinstall it again.

McAfee is always doomed to be dodgy. It's just got a very very very crappy coded engine. And it bogs down computers to a crawl.
I would recommend Norton Internet Security 2009, it's fast, light and it is what I install on new computers that I sell from my local computer store.
