I have tried a ton of virus/adware/malware scanners and removers and nothing seems to work!! My wallpaper keeps switching to this aggrivating error message no matter what I do, task manager won't open, and not even system restore can bail me out!!
I'm at wits end here, please help!

I highly recommend you download and run Spybot Search & Destroy. You need to run it in Safe Mode (tap F8 as the computer boots up and choose to boot to safe mode).
Ideally you should run a virus removal program in Safe Mode (without networking) and reboot and repeat the scan and reboot until there is a cycle where no virus is detected.
The idea behind the Safe Mode is that the operating system would only load your essential programs and drivers to the memory and hence there is a “high” chance that the virus-infected file is on the drive but not loaded into memory. This would enable the AV to clean it easily and the next reboot/scan would detect nothing. There could still be a small possibility that one of the drivers or programs that are loaded by the OS in the Safe Mode is infected. That’s why you need to keep rebooting and rescanning to make sure you’ve found them all.
I strongly recommend using FireFox, it's a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites. I also recommend CCleaner which is a free system optimization and privacy tool.

i had a similar problem to yours a few months ago. similar to what the first guy said, spybot is a useful program, but using it alone is not enough to fix ur comp.
after i tried spybot it removed most of the problem but all the changes the spyware did to my comp was not fixed. so i found the spybot forums, run by volunteers who help u with problems like yours.
go to http://www.forums.spybot.info
then click malware removal
read the first sticky, 'before you post'
then once uve learned what volunteers need post your problem. in 4 days or less a volunteer will come and help you solve your problems
with their help my computer was actually running as fast (possibly faster) than it did when i got it.

Norton. it can be used on three computers.
these are the feature's:
full backup of WHOLE hard drive
registry cleaner
live virus and spy-ware update
virus and spy ware scanner
firewall
identity theft protection(for shopping and untrusted websites)
pop up blocker
add on blocker
optimize disk
FREE on line support that's like msn (talk live to agent to help with problems
say you buy all in one security version 1 you can update to version 2 for free
1 year protection
filters downloads for virus and removes them
network cleaner
temporary cleaner(crap files that can store up to 10GB of crap) that's right 10GB
this is what i recommend. things like kasperky arent from trusted websites and i dont think you have support for it
be protected from virus and have your computer at peak performance with norton!! PS. NO JOKE
to enable task manager do:
go on run
1)type in msconfig
2)HKEY_CURRENT_USER
3) Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
4)DisableTaskMgr
5)1=Enable this key, that is DISABLE TaskManager
0=Disable this key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager

If your computer has been accessing the Internet unprotected it is infected.
Spyware has surpassed viruses as the #1 threat to identity theft and without protection your Internet activities are never private.
To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you can use an antispyware or even more.

If your task Manager is disabled + Registry disabled + files hidden + cant access drives on My Computer you are definitely infected with a virus!
I strongly suggest you try ESET NOD32 antivirus, its the best out of all that i have tried till now. Also try Spyware Doctor. It usually picks up those harmless non-virus like yet EXTREMELY malicious programs which change setting without permission like "task Manager disabled"
read here for more info on manually removing the virus if things dont work out http://andback.wordpress.com
Hope it helps!
