I,m trying to install AVG Free on a friends computer. He has Zone Alarm, Ad-aware, AVG Rootkit, but no anti-virus at present. It downloads ok but when you come to install a message appears saying ' Roxio CD & DVD Creator needs to be updated. A bug may interfere with AVG Antivirus' or words to that effect. The problem is the pc doesn't have Roxio installed on it (if it does it doesn't show up in All Programs, or Add & Remove Programs). All i can think is it may have been removed in the past and remnants remain. I can't update or uninstall what isn't there. Suggestions more than welcome.
Ps, I'm only interested in free software.

Have you looked in the registry to see if there are any remnants of Roxio in there that need to be removed ? Try running some program that cleans the registry and see if that helps.

If the file cdr4_xp.sys is on the system then it is a valid complaint. You can update the driver from here: http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/mserr/cdr4_7.html
If you don't have that file then I don't know what to suggest

AVG isn't very good especially with V8, I would suggest you go with Avast, higher detection rates, built in anti-rootkit and anti-spyware and free:

Roxio may have been partially removed, try RevoUninstaller:

It will also clear registry entries, leftover files/folders after clicking uninstall, then select advanced.
Ad-Aware is fine as long as it is Lavasoft Adaware2008.
AVG Anti-rootkit and anti spyware are no longer supported with release of AVG V8 which also causes problems as they are incorporated in the new version but only functional in paid version.
