help with security on home wireless network..?

August 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

ok, I have had my wireless connection set up for a while, I have gone to the 192.168.0.1 and went to the wireless network config page. when the ssid is enabled and the wireless encription key is- not- enabled I can us my wireless on my other computer. but this leaves it open for anyone around my street to access my wireless. BUT when I go and click the box to enable both ssid and wireless security none of the wireless works. ( even the kids psp,ps3 etc)
How do I set this up so that I have full security and have all of my wireless computer/electronics able to connect to internet ( with out having to keep unchecking the -enable- box and leaving out network open to others? I am so confused, and Im betting its something really easy but I am just missing something?
thanks
tried it..doesnt work.

You need to set a WEP key(16 character of letters and numbers all mixed up) as well as MAC address filtering which should both be options on your router. You are going to need to get the WEP key from the router itself or set it yourself and then enter it on the wireless devices when asked after trying to connection. MAC address filtering usually is set up on most routers so that you connect the devices you want allowed and then it will list all and you check them off to be allowed.

The SSID on your wireless router will have a key for WEP encryption. In order for other machines to use the connection you need to enable WEP on the wireless router and then input the SSID and WEP key on each machine you want to have a connection. Your ISP should have help pages specific to your router which can probably explain everything you need.

If you are using a Linksys router and a Windows Vista computer, see my web site at http://www.geocities.com/skwira000/securewireless.html

The only thing is you have an ip address of 192.168.0.1. I mention going to 192.168.1.1. Replace 192.168.1.1 with 192.168.0.1.
