Her background got changed too "YOUR INFECTED! CLICK HERE TO FIX IT!" and its pure malware.
I told her I'd fix it for her for no charge, so this is where my question comes in.
I plan on using Ad-Aware and Avast to scan her PC. Do you think the free versions will do? They have always done miracles for me.
She already has Norton installed and Spybot S&D, but I know that the definitions are VERY old. Her internetz is very slow, so I don't want to waste time updating them. I just want to burn Avast and Ad-Aware to a CD and install it from that.
Also, can I install them while in safe mode? I don't want anything interfering with the instilation.
Thanks!

You can install programs via CD while in safe mode.
I've had excellent results with Lavasoft's Ad-ware. Be sure you've downloaded the latest version so you won't be missing any definitions.
If Ad-ware doesn't work, give pcpitstop.com a chance too.
Best of luck!

The first thing you should know is the "YOUR INFECTED! CLICK HERE TO FIX IT!". If it tries to install something suspicious or a rouge program then better search google and do a research on how to remove the rouge program.
And also you need to know the name of the spyware/malware.
You can uninstall norton. Install Avast and ad-aware and make sure it is updated. Do a boot scan and safe mode scans using avast and ad-aware. The rouge should be removed if it is detected. If not then you will be forced to use some brute force like spyware doctor, hijackthis.
