My computer ia so slow. With everything not just internet. When I first got windows xp everything worked smooth and fast. I clean up my computer quite often. Any suggestions on files I can delete? Is there any way to compact the files I already have.
okay I tried defrag but my vomputer only has 6% free space but to run defrag it needs 15%. ?????????????????????????
Okay how do I know what is on hardware and how do I put it somewhere else to use defrag

There are a lot of things to consider. First of all, right-click on the task bar and select Task Manager. Go to the performance tab. It will tell you how the memory and processor are being used. If you have less than 1GB of RAM and a 2.0 processor, XP with the all the current patches and service packs will run slow. If XP is using more memory (RAM) than you have, it has to write things to the hard drive constantly and makes your computer run very slow.

Chaeck how many antivirus programs you are using. use only 1. try a lightweighted antivirus like AVG or NOD32.
Defragment your hard drive.
Use softwares like Ace utilities to remove junk files.
do a disk clean up
go to run, type prefetch and delete the files in the folder that comes up.
Dont store files on desktop
Do an online scan for virus. use the following link:
housecall.trendmicro.com
restart system after all this

I got this new program to clean the registry (Registry Booster 2) they give you one free scan though, but not more than 10 files cleaned up (I had 900 to clean up on the first go round!!!) it had not been cleaned up ever before that.
That helped a LOT and got more RAM much faster at everything now.
I have good spy ware program too windows defender, comes with XP and so run that once in a while too.
No any computer guru or anything, just happens that I got the right tools and the Registry cleaning tool is super easy to use, it keeps back ups so it something goes wrong you can back up several back up to retrieve the older registry.
Good Luck

You either have some viruses slowing down your computer or you need to defrag your computer.
Defrag- Easiest way to do this is to go the start button go to search and look up defrag. A program called disk defragmenter should come up. Open that up and press defragment. It might take a while.

Use Auslogics Disk Defrag (it's faster than the built-in Windows Defragmenter) to defragment your hard drive:
1) Download: http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download
2) Install
3) Run
Use Auslogics Registry Defrag to defrag the registry:
1) Download: http://auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/download
2) Install
3) Run and ignore the defragmenter when it says "Your PC is not Optomized!", Auslogics just wants more money.
Use EasyCleaner to clean up the system registry and clear out junk files.
1) Download (scroll down): http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
2) Install
3) Run the registry cleaner and junk file finder. Delete all unnecessary registry entries/files You may also want to stop some unnecessary programs from running at startup.
Uninstall unnecessary device drivers (yes, this does speed up your system):
1) Follow the instructions on this page: http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_installation_tips504.html
2) Reboot the computer
Install a good antivirus program and scan for any malware that may be hogging up system resources.
1) Link to Avast! Home Edition: http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
2) Download, register, install, scan.

1.Format your Hard drive, reinstall XP. Any Trojan/virus is wiped out for sure.
2.Dont install multiple anti virus programs, they really slow down the system. Use just one maybe McAfee.
3.You need atleast 1GB RAM to run XP smoothly.

You can go to con troll panel and click on performance and maintenance, than click on rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster. This could take quite a while so I recommend doing this right before bed. Also, It is possible you may have a virus. If you get Internet through time Warner, you can call them and tell them and they will hook you up with free virus software. 1 other thing is, if you have the windows xp disk, you could reinstall everything. I hope I've helped you:)

Cabi, all the above things will help your pc run faster.
But the best fail safe method is to first backup your important files to a cd, pen drive etc and then format your hard drive and reinstall windows xp. this will get rid of all unwanted files, viruses..etc.
this will save you a lot of time.
it happened to me and i backed up and reinstalled windows and all was running like clockwork.
