High School Firewall Is Blocking My Email to a Teacher?

August 14th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I’m sending the details of a club that I’m forming to a teacher. This teacher will then forward the email to the faculty so that I may find someone to lend support to the club.

The firewall called “X-Spam” keeps blocking my email to the teacher however, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out in editing the following so that it doesn’t get blocked:

The Nintendo Club

A New Club is being developed for the purpose of establishing a Social connection
between the gamers of Lodi High campus who enjoy to play the Nintendo Wii.

Among teenagers, the system is generally considered to be too childish, due to its lack
of violence and shoot-em-up type genres. But among those who are more interested in
strategic investments, it provides some great game play.

Through the work of this club, it also can provide a great social environment.

The Goal of this Club is to provide a social aspect to the general audience of the
Lodi High students - allowing them to invest some after school Friday time
to the purpose of getting together with old friends or even making new ones.

The club currently has at least three students on board, including three Lodi High students and one
from St. Mary’s.

Everything is ready for the club; It has been passed before, and we have its basic startup necessities.
Also, the grade requirement for the club will be 2.5 GPA with No D’s or F’s in current semester.

All the club needs now is a teacher to help out: someone that can provide students a place to meet up.

Meeting hours are currently planned to be about 2:20 to 4:00 Every Other Friday - just an
hour and a half every two weeks.

Please Reply If You can help out,

Thanks, John Zobac.

Your problem is technically not a “firewall” issue. X-Spam is an optional mail header (actually a class of headers including X-Spam-Score and/or X-Spam-Level and such) which helps mail servers detect and pass suspected spam state do downstream servers. My bet is that your school implements a spam filter either onsite or offsite and that is what’s blocking you. Here’s what I found…

      > host -t MX lodiusd.net
      lodiusd.net mail is handled by 10 eprism.lodiusd.k12.ca.us.

That suggest that lodiusd (Lodi Unified School District) uses ePrism which is a common web and mail filter. The ePrism email filter uses a combination of all common spam detection techniques including but not limited to:
      - Spam signature
      - Spam message patterns
      - Spam send patterns
      - Sender Policy Framework (SPF)
      - DomainKeys
      - DNS blacklists

To better determine why you are being blocked, first I need to know where you are sending from. Is it your own mail server or are you sending from a well known mail service such as gmail, yahoo, msn/hotmail, etc. If it’s a well known mail service, the the problem is most likely one of the first 3. Here are some suggestion to avoid these first three traps:

      - avoid potential spam keywords like “Nintendo Wii”, “strategic investments”, “Please Reply”, etc..
      - make sure you don’t send the same message to a bunch of people within a short amount of time. Usually within a day or two.
      - Watch what you put in the subject.. Avoid things like “please read” or “Great Opportunities” and such.
      - Don’t attach large documents.

Another suggestion is to send a test message to the teacher you are sending too. This message should be about something else completely. Just send him/her a message that has a few lines of random chatter. Don’t put anything in it about your club. Make the subject generic like “Did you get my previous email?” If he/she is able to get this email, then your problem is most likely because your email triggered some set of patterns or signatures.

If it doesn’t get through, then it’s likely your mail is bouncing through an open relay or a blacklisted server. If this is the case, open a gmail account for yourself and send your email from there.

      Good luck.
