Hotmail Compatible with Firefox Thunderbird?

I have tried EVERYTHING! I don’t like Windows Live because it always messes up, so i switched to Thunderbird. Lots of people have said it works with Hotmail e-mail accounts. I have an OLD hotmail account (at least 5 years old) #########@Hotmail.com So, I downloaded Thunderbird, entered in different port numbers and info i found from various sites—-it still doesn’t work! So, then i tried to update the add-ons for Thunderbird—-but everytime i do, it tells me that it’s not compatible with my Firefox (although my Firefox is up-to-date–I have Firefox 3.0.1—I think it’s the most recent because i’ve checked!). I don’t know what else to do! I want something free, that will put my hotmail account on my desktop! Any help!!????
