I've tried to do this by typing the name of my computer in the computer name section in the remote desktop connection window and it gives me an error message. "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator". This error message comes up every time.
Also, they are connected on the same router.

Yes indeed, this can be done. I do this from my main workstation (now running XP and Vista) to adjust my Media machine on the other side of the house, where I tweak VMware installations.
Things to verify.
1. Are both machines in the same Workgroup under their networking configuration? (I use MKR, not 'Workgroup', I hate generic defaults) While this isn't mandatory, being on the same LAN, it certainly helps.
2. Does the XP machine permit remote connection incoming? Does it permit the user account you are attempting to login with via remote location?
I've had some problems in the past using a "name" to connect, so I also make a list of all the IP addresses of machines on my LAN, and assign their MAC in the router, so it always remains the same.
3. Make sure the account you are attempting to use to remotely login has a password set up on the XP machine. I've never been able to do a remote login without a passworded account.
