I have Norton Internet Security and Windows XP Service Pack 2 on two computers. I have the Windows firewall turned off on both and use only the Norton firewall. But, various pieces of software on one computer function perfectly, while the same software on the other computer suddenly quit being able to make internet connections.
My internet connection works fine as I can use web browsers, and the software company told me that it is likely a firewall issue. Is there a way to detect my mystery third firewall program on this computer? Or, is there a way to get the software working again on my second computer? I have even tried turning Norton off as well, but still no luck…
Thanks!
Thanks for the info so far guys. But, why would Norton block this software on one computer and not the other (both run Norton). Also, I have it set to "allow" in my firewall settings.

well the first thing you have to do is look up something on the internet which your computer can track and disable, for example look up some pornography for a while and if some sort of block comes through you can disable it from there. If this does not work you will just have to remove the Norton Anti virus system.

Unfortunately, even turning off Norton does not ALWAYS mean that it will stop blocking software communication.
If possible, try booting to SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING by pressing F8 repeatedly when booting up your PC. At this point (assuming your software is accessible in safe mode), you can try running the software and see if it makes proper connections. If it does, then you most likely DO have a firewall issue (and probably from Norton). If it does not, then the issue lies elsewhere.

Firewalls are not like anti-virus,they normally do not leave chunks behind when the are un-installed.
Ever firewall that I have ever seen was visible in either process manager or in services.
the only exception I can thank of is maybe Windows on XP firewall.
For some reason this damn thing has a tendency to turn itself back on.
Might want to make sure that is not the case.
Are you really, really happy with Norton?
If so trying to figure out “why” Norton does something is a waste of time.
The whole program was more of a problem for me than any malware I have ever ran into.
