my mothers computer has been bogged down with countless viruses. nothing damaging as far as I can tell, but this thing is running really slowly. she has a scanner on here that says it detects 23 viruses, but can’t do anything about it. I want to download Avast to this computer and run a scan at boot-up so I can get rid of them before the computer starts. however, one of these tricky bugs is blocking access to avast.com, mcafee.com, and other antivirus sites. she has limewire installed (probably where they came from), but could I use it to download avast, or is there a safer way?

Download it on another computer for your operating system and save it to a flash drive, then load it to your computer.

Try to use a proxy server like:

http://youhide.com/
or download it from another website:

Sometimes one product is not enought to root out a virus or a trojan.
First download the following (if the virus is blocking your internet, you may have to download these on another machine and burn to CD or copy to a USB memory stick)
Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
CCleaner (cleans out caches) http://www.ccleaner.com
Avast! 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Now, start the machine in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)
Turn off System Restore on your machine, but only until you get this fixed - many of these trojans get copied into the System Restore files, which anti-virus programs aren’t allowed to touch and the viruses could reinstall themselves from there. My Computer > Properties > System Restore.
Then run Malwarebytes, and clean everything it says
Then run Superantispyware
Then run Avast - If a virus infection is persistent, use Avast to do a boot-scan - click on “schedule boot-scan” and restart the computer
Then run CCleaner
Then turn System Restore back on.
Now install the antivirus program and antispyware program of your choice to do continuous scanning, and make sure you keep it up to date.
Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

If you absolutely cannot boot even in Safe mode, then you may have to configure a universal boot CD, Avast has a preconfigured one you can buy from their site ($400) , http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_bart_cd.html
or google Universal Boot Cd http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ or BART CD http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Limewire is renouned for it’s multiple viruses, not really worth it considering you can get chucked in jail for using it.
The only thing I can think of doing is going into town and looking for an anti-virus that comes on a disk, like McAfee or Norton 360.
Or you can look for a mirror site for AVG or Avast! free edition like http://download.com
Good luck anyway!

try running in the safe mode as the computer boots keep hitting the F8 key and chose safe mode with networking so you can get on the internet . most viruses have a hard time operating in the safe mode , after you install AVAST reboot to the safe mode again and do a scan it is easier to clean in the safe mode also download a anti spyware program like SPY BOT you will need that too. and delete all temporary files.

You need to clean up the PC and make it virus free before you load anything else onto it.
Go to BitDefender.com and run their on-line scan. This takes a while but it will isolate most common malware. After you have the computer cleaned up you can install whatever protection that you like, but remember that no single product is adequate to do the whole job.
I use Norton for most general virus type malware. But I also run Spybot Search and Destroy plus Spyware Blaster (both are free). The combination of these 3 products does an admirable job protecting the PC’s that I support. Mine typically have no troubles after I set them up this way.

try this online scan first.
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
if you can’t get on this then go into safe mode with networking and use the microsoft scanner it’s the only online scanner that will work in safe mode. (as far as i can tell)
