Recently my internet explorer browser was infected by a fake virus alert. It is apparently a rogue anti-virus alert offering you to download their program. I have run a mcAfee anti-virus scan, and although it detected it, could not remove all of it.McAfee suggested I run the scan again to see if it still detected this trojan, ie generic pup.exe. I did and it still appears. I also ran Super Anti-Virus, A Program which I had success once before removing a trojan, and again, although it detects the trojan and offers to quarantine or remove it, can not!! However, it hi-jacked internet explorer browser and home page from loading at start-up along with my default search engine. My anti-virus scan tells me where I contracted it and offers me a chance to send it to the lab in a secured zip-folder, but I don’t know how to do this. Help please?

It is a rogue anti-spyware program similar to the well known XP Antivirus rogue application.

Try manually… First, stop it from running processes (ctrl+alt+del, task manager/processes, find it and stop it). Then, go start/run and type msconfig.exe, than go to startup. If it's there, deselect it. If it's there, you can also find the location of the infected file (usually it's c:\, c:\windows or c:\windows\system32). So, after you've stopped it, you can delete it. If everything else fails, try kaspersky
Hope I helped…

What you need is a file shredder. A file shredder removes files permanently and physically from a computer. Sometimes, when you simply “delete” a file, the actual content is still present. Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy. A file shredder is included. Open or drag generic-pup.exe in the file shredder window then click “chop it away.”
There is another option. Download AVG 8 Free Edition. Scan your computer in case the Trojan spread already. You can heal the Trojan or quarantine it to make it harmless. If I am not mistaken, AVG detects 90% of viruses, Trojans, spyware…etc.
I hope that this helps you. Thanks.
