You may want to try system restore! Your computer saves points throughout the week in case it ever crashes or gets a virus so you can just go back and hit the system restore option. This worked for me once but if it doesn't then you need to take it in to a computer shop and let them manually wipe your drive to get rid of the virus. Make sure you have anti-virus, anti-spy ware, etc. up and running all the time in the future! I also started using ccleaner! If you do a search on http://www.google.com you will see there is a free version that works excellent. The free software is called "Crap Cleaner" and it clears your computer of "CRAP". Good luck!

Norton 2008 and Windows live one care is good. You can download a 90 day trail of Windows live one care. At http://www.Microsoft.com

Do not use Norton. I am telling you now. I would recommend AVG free. It has been on my computer for over 2 years and I have not has one problem.

try an on line anti virus scanner like ,panda, kapersky, bit defender. I'm sure one of them work with firefox.
download programs straight from sight if possible.
did you try safe boot with networking yet?

Download these programs:
• AVG Free
• Ccleaner
• Spybot search and destroy
all available at http://www.filehippo.com
Once downloaded, run cccleaner and click every box to clean. Run the cleaner. Then install/run spybot and avg scan your computer with both.
** TIP ** I dont use spybot for spyware as much as i use AVG just in case. So, If i were u , i would go into ccleaner and go into startup and remove spybot from your startup programs. Up to you though.

Before you do anything drastic like reformatting your hard drive, try this. Turn your computer off. Turn it on, and hit F8 repeatedly while it's booting until a list comes up with an option for booting into Safe Mode, Normal Mode, etc. Highlight "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and hit enter. You'll need to log into an account with administrative rights. When the command prompt comes up, type this:
%systemroot%\system32\ restore\rstrui.exe
with no spaces between anything hit enter (for some reason Yahoo won't show the whole file path if I don't put a space in somewhere). This should open System Restore so you can restore your system to an earlier point before you starting having problems loading the desktop. Restart and see if your desktop will come up. If not, boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt again. Put your install disc in. Type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit enter. This will scan corrupt or missing system files and replace them. If it finds something, run it again when it's done. It has a habit of stopping after fixing one file, so you have to scan again to see if any other files need replaced.
If sfc fails, go back into Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Put your install disc in. This will only work if your install disc is the same version service pack as the one you're using. For instance, if you have XP SP2, you need an XP SP2 install disc. Type "expand D:\I386\explorer.ex_ %systemroot%\explorer.exe" into the command prompt (without the quotes) and hit enter. Then type "expand D:\I386\iexplorer.ex_ %systemroot%\iexplorer.exe" and hit enter. If the drive you put the disc in is something other than D:, replace D: with the right drive letter. This will replace Explorer and Internet Explorer with the original version from your install disc.
If none of these methods work, then you have two options. If you have all of your data backed up, you can just wipe your hard drive and reinstall the OS, then move all of your files and apps back on. If not, take your PC to a professional. Unless you have professional virus removal and data-backup tools, there's nothing else you can do (that I know of anyway).
