Free AVG is a bit tempermental at times , depending on where you downloaded it from . If you have other anti virus then uninstall it ,and re install from another site . You will find it is one of the better “background” anti virus programs you can use for general running - But have another scanner also

Make sure you actually have an email program installed (MS Outlook, Thunderbird or whatever program you like to use).

Make sure the email scanner is activated. Open the AVG user interface, double click on “E-mail scanner” (Or use the menu option “Components” > “E-mail scanner”). In the screen that opens, make sure the checkboxes at the bottom are ticked to your liking: “Scan incoming messages”; “Scan outgoing messages”; “Display notification window while e-mail is being scanned”.
