My computer is a Toshiba Satellite p305d-s8818 (but I can’t find any manuals on that specific model, it usually redirects me to just the satellite p300) and has an s-video output, yet when I hook it up to the TV and take all the appropriate steps, it does not work. http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http–cdgenp01csdtoshibacom-content-support-manua-userguides-su2021312-SatP300GMAD0016401008Jan24pdf&sliceId=pdfPage_60&dialogID=51745120&stateId=0%200%2051743436 That’s the user’s guide but it only briefly mentions s-video. please help!
Whenever i enable the second monitor, and then apply and say OK to keeping the current settings, the monitor is still not enabled (as inicated by the grey/watermarked "2" screen), and I can move the pointer all along the edge of the screen all the way around and it does not go off the screen, implying that there is no hidden field out of view of my laptop monitor

If you have S-Video out in your laptop then go to dual monitor mode by pressing Fn+F4 key other wise connect RGB cable from laptop to tv and do the same RGB Cable has 15 pin connectors on both ends

You probably need to go into the video card settings, you can access it through the control panel or the quick launch, or with some vid cards you can access the basic video setting from you computer properties>display tab. Select dual monitor, setting the tv as the secondary. set the hz and resolution as they need to be, if you dont know and it doesnt tell you then just try different ones, it should work once you find the right settings from there. If you have problems with s-video you will have problems with rgb, its the settings that wil have the problem not the connection.

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba Satellite P300 (which has a ATI Radeon HD 3470 graphics card) as it did not seem able to detect the TV.
The Fn F5 (switch displays) only ever showed the laptop’s LCD screen, there was nothing I could find under the control panel’s to change the 3470’s settings.
In the end I downloaded ATI’s Catalyst Control Center and using the Advanced options I was able to force the card to detect the TV (under display options) connected via the 4-pin s-video cable. Then Fn F5 showed the different possible combinations.
