How can I tell if Avast anti-virus is running correctly on my PC?

After installing Avast anti-virus I looked at the Processes tab on my computer’s Windows Task Manager. I couldn’t see any reference to Avast there, so I am not sure whether it is running properly.
If Avast IS there and running, what should I look for?
I’d be grateful for some help from anybody who is already using the Avast free programe (and who knows more about computers than I do)!!! Thanks if you can help me with this
