1) Download and install EasyCleaner: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
Reboot.
2) In the EasyCleaner Add/Remove list, find "Norton AntiVirus"
3) Click on the "Delete" button - NOT THE UNINSTALL BUTTON
4) Find where Norton is stored on your computer - it's usually in the C:\Program Files folder.
5) Delete Norton AntiVirus and everything related to Norton. If Norton is running while you are trying to delete, try to stop it. If it will not stop, boot into Safe Mode and delete the files. If you do not know how to get into Safe Mode, read the end of my answer.
6) Delete any Start Menu shortcuts that relate to Norton.
7) Launch EasyCleaner again and do a Registry clean-up.
9) You should now be free from that piece of junk called Norton.
To boot to Safe Mode:
1) Turn off your computer.
2) Turn it back on while repeatedly tapping the "F8" key.
3) Use the arrow keys to select the option to boot to Safe Mode and press the "Enter" key to boot.
4) Log in and do what you need to do. Since you're using XP, I recommend logging in as the Administrator to avoid any problems.
