I have a P4 computer with 3.20Ghz processor and 2.2 GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive and i use disk cleanup and disk defragmenter daily and there are only two programs on my start up list and no registry errors, but my computer still just seems to be kinda slow
It's windows XP and hyperthreading

Are you using windows Vista? If so it's because Vista takes up about 1gb of your ram at any given time.

your computer gets warred out if you on it to much and you cant fix that only if you buy a new computer

If it has been 6+ months since you last formatted, that could be it. Also, hard drives may be going bad - you only need to defrag like once or twice a month. It makes the HD work more to defrag, so it may be dying.

Are you running vista? If you're running vista that could be why it seems slow. Also you have a single core processor which isn't too good for multitasking, that can slow things down.

Windows is just plain slow! If you have internet security software it can really slow down your computer. Are you using Vista? I run Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) with almost 3 times more RAM than what I need and it is blazing fast. I only have 1GHz! I know Vista eats up RAM, and RAM really determines how fast your PC is.

1) If your running Vista on a P4 even at 3.2 Ghz it might be a little slow.
2) If your running XP and you've run a registry fixer I've found that they tend to break more than they fix and it could be the cause of the slowness.
3) It could be your virus scanner or maybe you have had two installed at the same time at one point, one can break the other causing problems until you uninstall both and reinstall just one. finally
4) If your using over 500 megs of memory with XP on the initial boot up you've just got too much crap on your PC. Go to Start>RUN and type in msconfig then go to startup and google each item and remove the ones you don't think you need.

Spyware. Not always going to show it is running in task manager. Get a spyware program and scan it or get a program called hijack this and run it to help diagnose (it is free).

the disk cleanr thing doesnt really effect it all that much i dont think. its best only to use them like once eveyr 2 weeks or something to keep your temporary files but they dont really count for it slowing down that much. as for the startup that really only judges how fast ur comp will turn on because of the amount of things it has to load up.
if you got a Dell the easiest thing to do would be the dell system resore which is done by holding control and tapping f11 on startup. this deleltes everything except the files on the comp when it first came, so you will need to backup your important files that you want to keep. you can put them on ur ipod or external HD.
if not you can format your hard drive and then re install your operating system from the disk that came with ur comp. this should see a noticable improvment in speed.
another thing to consider is the operating system you choose to install. vista use more processor power and RAM so if you want to always be in super fast real time you may want to get a less demanding OS. Ubuntu is very easy on the memory and can do the same and more that vista can. its also simple to install, but there are online guides a google search away for that. just make sure all your hardware is compatible (especially wireless network adaptor and graphics card) before you install.
another thing you migh want to consider is what software you use. virus scanners can be memeory hogging, but they are neccessary. also soem micorsoft programs, mainly internet explorer are slow just because they are. you may want to try some freeware programs like firefox or opera as these are much less demanding to ur comp.
finally, dont get yourself worried about the speed of your computer. if you compare it some peoples, you would prob find that ur comp comes out faster. just relax and if you get frustrated y ur comps speed, sit back relax or walk away, go get a drink and watch tv. i mean its nothing to get worked up about.

Due to the info you supplied on your pc it seems that you should have sufficient resources, My suggestion would be to download "Diskkeeper" one of the best hard drive utilities ive used 5 min defrag vs. forever with windows. it also gives you seek times and health of your disk. Increase your page file usage, and if your running Vista turn off disk indexing (vista will thrash a hard disk by constantly indexing and re indexing)
hope this helps.
