How come my monitor has power but whenever i switch off to like a game, or changing screens, it turns black?

When i boot up my comp, it shows the data screen and then it goes black when it switches off, i know its not loading because when i unplug it and plug it back in, im already at desktop, so it loads even without the monitor. The monitor for some reason i dont know won't display the image when the comp switches to another screen……. What might be the problem?
