I was not satisfied with the last batch of answers, so I'm asking again…
Alright, so my computer is protected with the 2007 version of Norton Internet Security. Almost every time I sign on to the Internet (I use Firefox, if that helps), I get a message saying "An intrusion attempt to your computer has been blocked" or something like that. This happens to me between 5-10 times while I am on the Internet. Norton alerts me only if it is a "high risk" intrusion. Mostly, they are all low risk intrusions, but there have been occasional instances of high risk intrusions as well. Could someone please tell me exactly what this means? Does it mean someone is trying to hack into my computer to try and get personal information, or something else? Also, Norton tells me the IP address of the attacker. Is there any way to look up IP addresses to find out who's attacking my computer?
Any help would be much appreciated. ![]()

I don't think that this is really telling you a great deal. There are all manner of programs out there that simply scan for unsecured ports on computers connected to the internet (your ports are secured, which is why you're getting the alerts).
If one of these programs finds an unsecured port then they can potentially access your computer, either to get personal information or to gain control of your computer to send out spam, launch a denial of service attack, etc. You could use nslookup command to see more details on the IP address, but even that isn't going to give you a lot more information.
You're doing the right things - you're protecting yourself with Norton. These port scans are pretty much a fact of life on the internet - I don't think that anyone is after you personally.
