How do I fix this windows xp problem?

I downloaded a file off my email. It would not open so i did an internet search and it recommended i download adobe reader. i did. the file still wouldnt open so the computer recommended another search on the web to see which program created it. well somewhere along the way i pushed something i shouldnt have and now all my desktop icons arent working. nero smart start, limewire, nothing will open. i cant get it to do a system restore either. nothing is working basically. i think all my icons are in the wrong format. a pop up comes up when i click on one. it says “windows cannot open this. to open it windows needs to know what program created it. ” if you can help please do.
