I am currently using Windows Vista. After I started to get annoying pop-up ads and slow performance I knew something was up.
I installed spybot and lavasoft ad-aware 2007, which detected Double Click, Media Plex, and Virtumonde. I was unable to get those programs to remove virtumonde so I did a google search on removing virtumonde.
A website came up suggesting spyhunter, but I didn't want to spend money unless I was sure that it would fix the problem. Any suggestions?

have you tried running vista in safe mode
the reason spybot and the others have difficulty removing the spyware is because they're in use if you use safe mode nothing is running except windows the spyware won't be running so spybot should be able to delete them

You could try the Yahoo antispy. It is free, detects adware, spyware and trojans.

Please refrain from even thinking about using SpyHunter because it has a negative reputation. It belongs to Enigma Software. It gives false positives by the bucket load and also known for failing to remove the infection. You can see more of it down below. Ignore the positive advertised reviews.

As the above answerers already suggested some of the tools that can remove it. Try out Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to remove it. To use the program, save it to your Desktop, and then close all Windows, and then double-click on the program to open, and then update first before running the program, and then after that, reboot your PC. It's free to use.

EDIT: I think you're confusing it with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Pro which is the paying version. That is why I'm advising him to manually update it first before running the program.
"Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is FREEWARE, however you may upgrade to the PRO version which contains realtime protection, scheduled scanning and updating."

Yeh the one above is good but for virtumonde (i.e winfix) this is freeware.
