i have made a separate partition for the installation of xp but when i boot off the cd it says that “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacture supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3″
Can anyone help me. I looked at some forums and i found that i might need windows xp sata controller drivers. If so where can i download one for VAIO VGN-FZ290EBB and how do i use it

Google “VAIO VGN-FZ290EBB windows xp sata controller driver” and see what it come up with. It should say before it loads up in the setup if you want to install third party drivers. look for it on the bottom of the screen and take it from there. I’m guessing you will have to put it onto a floppy or something. google to see how to install the driver also…

You are correct that you need SATA controller drivers to feed into the XP setup program, but that's not all, as XP is not going to include drivers for many of the devices that your VAIO has. To get your laptop working under XP you will need a number of driver and software downloads.
Luckily, the best place to go (laptop manufacturer website) can help you. If you go to the Sony VAIO support site for your country, enter the drivers section and select your model, useful 'downgrade' to XP SP2 information will appear, along with some download links and instructions (I appreciate you are actually doing a dual-boot system rather than a true downgrade)
