Well I went to a website while surfing the internet, and I was suddenly prompted to run a scan for infections on my computer. I did, and some "infections" showed up. However, I did not buy the fake antivirus, and promptly used task manager to close up the window.
I went to control panel>add and remove programs, and there was no trace of the spyware.
I also ran some QUICK scans using SpyHunter and SUPERAntiSpyware, but neither found any results pertaining to the virus.
Am I infected or not? I would think that the spyware was automatically downloaded onto my computer via trojan when I opened up the hijacked webpage, but I can't seem to find any traces of it. I have not restarted my computer or anything, and have not had any pop ups/slow system complications.
So do I have the spyware or not? I will run a full scan shortly.

most likely not. that sounds like just another fake antivirus scan scam.
scan your computer with some good software to be sure.
for antivirus:
AVG Free
for spyware:
Ad-aware 2007
scan your computer with both of these programs and remove whatever is there. It's nothing to worry about.

Maybe you stop it before it could install itself all over the place. But don't take a chance as I heard that program is very hard to get rid of (out of your computer) Do a Full Scan right away. Use this program to run the scan (http://www.superantispyware.com) This is a very good spyware program. Good Luck.

There is actually a TROJAN now in the wild with the alias XP Antivirus.
So it would be wise for you to run a scan for both malware, and virus. If you have it, one of them will pick it out.
If your present protections did not pick it out for you, and immediately give you the opportunity to DELETE it, then what you have is crapp.
A. Get AVAST
1. Remove what you have now. It didn't do right did it? Dump it
2. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete the anti-virus program you have now,
if you have one;
then use your Search feature, type in the name of your current anti-virus program
if you have one > right click and delete any instance it finds.
Download from here:
http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html…..
Install > run > do a thorough scan
and allow it to run on your computer all the time.
Whatever it finds > select DELETE
The annual registration and frequent updates are free too.
B. Get free Ad-AWARE spy-removal tool from Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-a…
1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.
