The computer's fine when It first starts up, avast will be running as usual but only be using about 2% cpu, but when it finds a virus, the CPU usage soars to 75-100 percent and stays there unless I reboot the computer. All my applications practically freeze and become virtually unusable, avast sits there and seems to do absolutley nothing, and I can't do anything about it. I've tried changing the process priority but avast shows up as a system application with 'high' priority so I can't change it. I also have no way to close avast, it won't let me do that either.
What's the problem, how do I fix it, why the hell is avast programmed in such a completely asinine way that it makes my computer virtually unusable and doesn't give me the option to change it?
I think I should change it, the computer's virtually unusable. Luckily I don't get that many viruses, thanks to avast.

I have used Avast for years, I love it, and I have never had a problem with it - and it is NOT supposed to do what you have described. From the sound of it, I would say that your program has become corrupt. My advice is to reboot your computer and go into safe mode. In safe mode, go to your "Add/Remove" program (Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove) and remove Avast. I would then download Avast again (your previous download may have been corrupt when you installed the program - or your program could have become corrupt during the download of an update or by a virus) and reinstall it. There is certain malware that you can get on your computer that will attack your antivirus/antispyware programs and cause them to malfunction or make them virtually useless. Good Luck.
