i recently bought this laptop from ebay, they person i bought it from got it from a company that had recently liquidated.
when i boot it up it loads for a second then reads…
“this computer system, #*******-D35B, is protected by a password athentication system. you cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password.”
so i contacted dell customer support and they said that they could not help me cause the #******* was supposed to be a number and not a series of stars. so, how do i ether make this visable again, or bypas this?
i have looked all over the web and not found this problem.
im really not anygood at computers so a step by step would be good.

you take the CMOS battery out, (it looks like an oversized watch battery and there’s a little green light bulb next to it in my machine), turn the machine on and let it boot, then turn it off, put the battery back in, and turn it on again and let it boot

You can open the computer casing and try to find the small battery like battery for watch, take it out and start the computer, it will remove the password. After you can login to Windows, just shut down and put back the battery, it’s done

You won’t be able to reset it or change it without knowing the password (removing the CMOS battery as some people who are answering questions in the laptops category despite only knowing about desktops may tell you to do won’t actually reset the BIOS password as the password with laptops is stored in non-volatile memory that will keep its contents even if you remove the battery (which is probably soldered in anyway)).
Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if the person you bought it from lied to you about where it came from (i.e. the laptop is probably stolen). Only Dell can reset the password and they’ll need some proof that you are the legitimate owner (along with the serial number, which should be on a sticker somewhere on the laptop along with the model information).
Reporting it to eBay might also be worth trying (although don’t expect anything to actually happen as a result) since you were sold non-functioning goods.
