I have a laptop with Vista installed on it with around 25 gigs of music I want to transfer to my desktop that uses XP. They are on the same wireless network, and they can be connected by an Ethernet cable. Portable hard drive is not in my budget.
Thanks for any help.

Make sure both the computers in the same network..
if yes then you have to share the Music folder on the vista computer by
Right click -> Properties -> Sharing -> Share -> Select Everyone -> Add ->
Go to XP computer -> My network places ->
You will be able to access the Music folder on the Vista computer, Just open it and transfer it to the xp computer

hold down the Windows LOGO Key and press R
Next type in the name of the computer with 2 "\'s" like this
\\myxpcomputer <enter>
To find out the name of your XP Computer, Right click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES
Click on the COMPUTER NAME tab
You may want to click on the desktop then RIGHT CLICK and select NEW\FOLDER and name it MY SHARED STUFF.
Then Right click on the new folder and select SHARING and enable sharing. ALLOW USERS TO ALRTER MY FILES. This will be better so you can easily find your files.
Now on the Vista machine you typed in \\nameofpc and you hit enter, you MAY have to login so you wil lwant to use the login ID that you use on the XP machine. Then you will be greeted with the contents of the XP machine (that's shared).
Just copy the files over into the MY SHARED STUFF folder as you would any local folder.

Assuming both machines are on the same workgroup and you have admin rights on both machines you should be able to wack into your desktop from your laptop.
Try this:
Go to Start > Run > type the name of the other machine in the following format "\\desktopname\c$" but without the quotes. This will take you to the C drive of your desktop. From there you can navigate to where you want to place your .mp3 files.
Make sure you have File Sharing turned on, too.
To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP follow these steps:
1.Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2.On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3.Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.)
