Okay, I'm having a little difficulty. I'm running XP SP3 and the original MSN Messenger is constantly running in the background.
Please, for those of you who skim over a question and give it a quick answer…..the proper boxes for Remember Me and Start Messenger When Windows Starts are UNchecked, but still the program runs and requires a manual closing to shut it down.
I'm using Windows Live Messenger and cannot find the original Messenger on the list of installed programs as it is embedded in XP.
Yes I can log out every time, but that is not the point. I want the program off the computer. Please no other suggestions.
I had to get this out of the way because usually only about 25% of answers given on YA are worth their salt.
What I want to do, what I believe is my only option available (correct me if I am wrong), is to remove it from the registry, but I haven't a clue as to how to do this.
Can anyone help me out?

right click on the short cut and select delete, when the box pops up don't click ok, there is a blue hyperlink in the box which will take you to the uninstall/ change list. find the program you want to delete and then select remove
hope this helps, good luck

Got to run: type regedit: look for it and delete.
You can download Cclean and use it to delete the program from you startup menu. You can also go to C and program files and delete it from there but this is not a good idea.
This should solve your problem for you.

Hmm you're talking about Windows Messenger, right?
Try checking the start with windows option, then clicking ok, then go back to the options pannel and unchecking the start with windows option.
Also, check your start menu folder to make sure it's not there. Start > Programs > Startup
As a last resort click start, then run, and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab, and find the entry for Windows Messenger. I believe the startup item label for it is the same as WLM though, so you have to be careful of which one you disable. Check the command path to make sure it's not the one that points to Windows Live/Messenger. Uncheck the box next to it, and you should be good to go.
Actually uninstalling it is usually harder than people make it seem, and can actually cause things to stop working properly. Other programs use part of it. Just like completely uninstalling internet explorer is pretty much impossible.
Hope this helps.
