How do I uninstall old versions of Java when add or delete programs does not work?

I have Java 6 Update 13 installed. I also have Java Update 3 and 5. I can’t remove the older versions from Add or Remove programs from the Control panel. I get a message about a fatal error during installation of the old versions. How can I remove these? Also, if I’m not a developer do I even need Java??
