How do u get rid of XP antivirus 2008 & y doesnt TrendMicro work?

August 12th, 2008 · 7 Comments

My pc got infected with XP antivirus 2 days ago. I tried to get rid of it by trying some methods from http://www.windowsvistaplace.com/xp-antivirus-2008-removal-instructions-xp-antivirus-2008/spyware-removal. Like i got rid of most of it (i think) by going to run, regedit & going to system 32 & program files manuallyremoving it. Xp antivirus doesnt show in my add/remove programs in control panel & in the start menu anymore. & my wallpaper is fixed too. To make sure its gone, i tried adaware & TrendMicro but somehow my browser Firefox keeps closing by itself when i start TrendMicro which is why i dont think i got rid of it. Also when i try to search for the files on my comp., the window closes by itself.
i did use safe mode but trendmicro still didnt work :/

      This PROGRAM is classified as a “problem application” (program) by Symantec. This culprit reports problems that do not exist. The solution is to get rid of the program.
      You will need removal tools
      A. Symantec instructions
      B. Hijack This
      C. AVAST

      A. Here is Symantec a write-up:
      http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-071613-4343-99&tabid=2
      Now, you don’t need to purchase Norton, as AVAST and excellent FREE anti-virus tool and will clean any virus just fine…
      so I’ll give you that info below too.

      Note: When follow the Symantec removal instructions, when you get to the part about disabling System Restore, make yourself a posty note to remember to ENABLE system Restore when you are finished.
      =====================================
      B. Also, look for the culprit program using this tool.
      Use CAUTION as to what you remove.
      Get free anti-hijacking tool
      for any hijack problems you might encounter
      1. The program is called HiJackThis 1.99
      http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.h…

      2. Download and run the program
      BE CAREFUL what you delete,
      from it’s findings…because
      it will find the offending program
      and others that you may NOT want to delete.
      Only delete the one that hijacked you.
      =====================================

      When all is done, run AVAST
      Avast free Home Edition
      Get it here:
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht…

      And please do a “thorough” scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.

      When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).

      Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will “automatically” update itself, also for free.
      You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.

      Note: I know of several people who have used AVG and gotten a virus anyway.
      I’ve tried them all, and have had wonderful results with this one for the last 5 years.

    • 6 malware_expert // Aug 12, 2008

      XP Antivirus 2008 (XPAntivirus 2008) is a new version of well known fake spyware cleaner. This program have aggressive behaviour and deceptive advertising tactic. XP Antivirus 2008 displays false security warnings and malware detection reports to scare users into buying full version of this useless program. Likewise older versions, XP Antivirus 2008 can install other malware, capture browser’s homepage, redirect search results and slow your computer. We recomend to remove XP Antivirus 2008 from your PC.
