How do users get infected with XP AntiVirus 2008…?

September 27th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have seen many computers users get infected by rogue software, like XP AntiVirus 2008 etc..

I have tried to get a system infected purposefully on a virtual machine, but found it quite difficult to do so. So I went to SpywareWarrior to find some links.

When I did find the rogue software, I installed it - along with other software.
Spybot S&D found:
VirusBlast
Ad-Protect
NoAdware
Smitfraud-C
Vario RogueAntiSpy
ContraVirus
KazaapAdwareAndSpywareRemover
Fraud.XPAntiVirus

Another thing is I went on to sites that give Drive-By-Downloads, but IE6 asked me whether I wanted to save, run or cancel everytime.

My point being is that I found it difficult to get the system infected even with a unpatch version of Windows XP Home.

The most common ways of getting infected is by downloading infected wallpapers and music files and by downloading cracked software from places like limewire.

you usually get it with illegally downloaded software- the most common being keygens and cracks, it installs wen the user puts the keygen in and instead of running the program it installs antivirus 2008… ive done it soooo many times =(

I believe many of them believe the pop up and click install.

Their internet explorer “install on demand” is enable.
Their remote registry edit is also enable.
Their firewall may be turn off.
