How do you backup files from a JVC Everio to a PC?

I've tried using the Mini USB ports on both the dock it plugs into and the front of the camera but both don't seem to work. I have about 3 pages of video on there, and when I use the software that came with the camera, it doesn't detect the camera for some reason, despite it being detected by my computer's hardware.
