How do you share a drive over a network between a xp computer and a vista umpc?

October 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments

How do i share a cd/rw drive from an xp computer to a umpc vista computer.
Its too confusing, i already set up networks i dont need, and somehow cant delete.
they are set up i just cant get my two computers to communicate.

Is it a problem or setting with the router, i have a linksys WBEFS11 Wireless
i have the ip and password to go to its settings just need to know what to press and edit.
Is it forwarding? ports? I dont see any internet sharing settings

can someone tell me step by step i will give them lots of points…

Hey, i did what you told me but i get
"the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect"

I also get "is not recognized as an internal or external command"

Help me out…. what is missing

well the network drive should have an ip address attached to it something like192.168.100.200 you should be able to see that on either computer once you plug the drive into the network after you know the ip you type it in internet explorer and the drives webpage should come up then you add that page to favorites and repeat the process for the other computer then if you wanna access the drive drag the favorites icon onto the desktop and when you click it the drive will come up

Actually, this is fairly simple to do.
      On your windows XP computer,
1- Double click on “My Computer”
2- Right click on your CDROM drive, and select “Properties”
      3- Select the “Sharing” Tab
4- Select the “Share this folder” radio button, and in the field type in “CD”
      Click ok Twice.

Now, one thing to verify before you proceed is that your Windows XP computer does not have its firewall turned on, or file sharing isn’t disabled. so the easiest way to work around that for now, is to disable your firewall, you can verify this by doing this:
1- Go to Start /Control Panel / Windows Firewall
2- Make sure it’s set to Off

Now you have to make sure you know the IP address of your windows XP computer (you can do it by name, but there are more variables that may complicate things in that, so we’ll stick with IP).
      To find this out:
1- Go to start / Run … and type cmd
2- in the black box that comes up, type: ipconfig
3- Find the value next to IP Address, write that down.

      On your Windows Vista computer,
1- Go to start , and in the search box, type cmd
2- On the blackbox that comes up, type the following:
net use * \\\CD (where will be replaced by your IP that you wrote down from your XP computer, so if your IP is 192.168.1.5 , the command will be like this:
      net use * \\192.168.1.5\CD
Now just go to “My Computer” on your vista computer, and you should have an additional drive mapped that has the CD ROM drive from your XP computer.

      Hope that helps.
