Ok, before I take this question to the inconsiderate, unknowledgeable Norton Chat staff, I figure I'd ask this question here. Now, for those people who are familiar with the Norton A/V 2008 screen, there's no "Close Norton" icon anywhere. I've clicked on all the menues to try to find a "stop Norton" but to no avail. Even right clicking on the Norton icon at the bottom right of the screen doesn't have a "close Norton".
This is the worst POS software that I've ever came across. I have a quad core gaming PC and it's totally lagging my games at least once a day for a period of 15 minutes. It's annoying, and it isn't even running a Virus scan per se. I have no idea what it's doing, but it makes the computer unable to run for that time period.
So please, anybody know how to turn this POS software off? Unfortunately, I have a 2 yr subscription to this software.. so I can't uninstall it. suggestions? Can I also return the subscription?

Add/Remove hardware in the control panel. Uninstall it… and go buy ZoneAlarm @ Zone Alarm.com You can request a refund for poor Quality Of Service. Stick one to Symantec… Boo On them. Only good program from them is Symantec Ghost… hard disk Imaging software to backup your PC. Dun dun dun… NERO HAS ONE TOO NOW!
I run my laptop with Zone Alarm… Core2 Duo 1.66Ghz and 512Mb Ram with crappy integrated intel graphics accelerator. I play Delta Force: Black Hawk Down with virus scan running. There's also a nifty little feature called game mode… where it will run silent and low profile so your resources can be dedicated to the game.
2 Firewalls - Operating System firewall to prevent critical system file access w/o permission… and a "remember this setting" feature to set for common system files.
The other is the network firewall. It logs any potential incoming threats and outbound threats. (trojans would be an outbound threat) It notifies you so you can respond with an approval for the application to reach outside your network and you can also donkey-punch it with a denial.
Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware which you can set to run with Low resources and run slower or High Resources and run much faster to get it done and overwith. Sometimes if I know I'll be busy I'll turn off scheduled scans.
Data Encryption service to encrypt your "IMPORTANT" data on your hard drive and also encrypt through sending over the internet.
Messenger encryption… Smart email anti-virus/spyware with Junkmail Filters(outlook, etc).
Good program!
Excellent program and… frankly.. it gets more viruses then Symantec ever would. I used to have the Corporate Edition on my laptop and that was even a joke… It's a fast scanner… I scanned my entire hard drive in 5-8 Minutes… The quality… was very poor! Even trend micro missed these…
I'm tired of Cheap POS software from Trend Micro, Symantec, and McAfee. Zone Alarm has 2 Thumbs and 2 Big Toes up for excellence!

Hi,
you are correct "Norton's" will and does really slow your system up, but you have to use the Uninstall tool from there web site to uninstall it completely (YES it's that bad, and you have to pay for it as well), Add & Remove will NOT uninstall it correctly, after you uninstall it do this, follow the link to download a completely free version of "AVG" and then use that as your Anti-Virus (it will not let you down). this will help you.

just because you have a 2 years subscription to the software, doesn't mean you can not uninstall it. you can uninstall it at any time, you may not be unable to get a refund on the subscription, or the remaining portion of it. according to symantec.com (http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/cs/kbload.jsp?docurl=step_cancel_subs_returns&selected_nav=0&prev_id=returns&prev_link=link_04 ) :
You may obtain a refund for your subscription if both of the following qualifications are true:
* You purchased your subscription within 60 days prior to your refund request.
* You purchased a product upgrade during that same 60-day period.
now for you situation, i'm assuming you want actually stop Norton from starting when you turn on your computer. you can do that by going into your Start menu and click on run (if you are running Windows Vista using the default Start menu, there will be a search bar at the bottom of the menu). type in "msconfig" and hit enter. that will open the System Configuration window. click on the Startup tab and uncheck all the items from the manufacturer Symantec Corporation and click on the "OK" bottom on the bottom of the window. another smaller window will pop up saying that you need to restart your computer for the changes to take affect. you can either click on "Restart Now" to let your computer shut down and restart, or (for a slightly faster option) click on "Restart Later" and go into your Start menu and click on Log Off and and then log back in.
you can also use this option to prevent most other program from starting when you turn on your computer.

you can remove it.
or you can disable it by right clicking it in the task bar and then click disable and set the amount of time to disable it. i don't recommend. leaving it off. you can uninstall it and install AVG anti virus, its free.
i have had networking problems with norton not letting me connect to other computers on my network so i got rid of it.
