      1. Scanning and the 'Virus Vault'

With AVG 8.0, you can click on 'Computer Scanner' to scan your computer for viruses.
On the Computer Scanner page, you can also visit the 'Virus Vault' which consists of viruses that have been detected in your computer.
These viruses are quarantined, so they can do no harm to your computer.
If you want to delete them off your computer, click DELETE, NOT RESTORE.
'Restore' sets the virus free. Before deleting a virus, wait about a week to see how the computer runs without it, because the file infected may be important to the system.

Oh, and you can select the certain files you want scanned, by the way.

      2. Update/Scanning Schedule/Even more Viruses ):

AVG, if you set it to standard installation, will update and scan your computer every day at a scheduled time. When it detects a virus, a window will pop up saying 'Threat detected'. You can either heal the file(if possible), or move it into the Virus Vault. Please do not ignore it.
If it cannot be healed, as I mentioned before, move it to the Virus Vault and wait around a week before deleting it.

      3. Scanning before opening a file

If you downloaded a file or inserted a USB or CD or any external memory storages into your computer, go to the location where the file exists or resides, and right click. Select 'Scan with AVG Free'.
This allows you to scan the file before opening it, which would set the virus free. Handy, eh?

Please don't open the file and THEN scan it… Eg. If you insert your USB, go to 'My Computer', and scan the USB drive (F) before opening it with the pop up thing that usually comes up.

With Spybot, just click on 'Check for Problems' and that's pretty much the way it goes. This scans your computer.

Spybot also allows you immunise your computer against harmful websites that you have had experience with in the past. You open up Spybot with admnistrator's power and you can immunise your computer.

Spybot can detect changes in your computer(programs, most of the time), and allow you to deny them. This is handy if an unwanted program downloaded itself onto your computer.
