how else can i improve my computer security???

May 27th, 2008 · 4 Comments

i run a good anti virus (avira antivir)
a good anti spyware (spyware terminator)
a good firewall (comodo 3 pro)
a good all around malware program (a squared free)
plus secunia psi to make sure windows and all the programs are updated and patched
ccleaner
firefox 2 with no script and adblock plus ( the two best firefox add ons)
mcafee site advisor
eusing free registry cleaner

am i missing anything?
i am not really interested in those who think avast is better or spyware doctor, but am i leaving out anything important overall that could enhance my security without shelling out big bucks?
and is it really necessary, do i have sufficient security now or what?

If you have McAfee, you are pretty much set. I also have a program called "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and "Spybot - Search and Destroy"; but those sites are just good extras to have, nothing necessary.

      Hope I helped.

      Hi,

You need to get a better antivirus. Try NOD32.

Download Ccleaner to delete all trash data, including temp files, most of them have personal information.

      Everything else is all right.

      Greetings,

      As a Professional IT Consultant…

A few things I gotta say here, the main one being….Don't use Registry Cleaners!!
Unless you know what the purpose of each hive is and what the relation of these to the keys are, and unless you know "exactly" what everything in the registry means……don't use them. There isn't a single one of those useless programs that don't put up "False Positives" and until they're 100% accurate, needed keys are going to be tagged for cleaning.
I have seen more systems hosed by these "cleaners" than by almost anything else, besides of course Virus and Malware. Most folks who use these programs have no business mucking around in the registry! I would venture a guess that probably 75% of those who use these, don't even know how to properly edit things in there so they sure shouldn't be deleting things from it.

And besides that, all this stuff about things in the registry slowing down your machine is wrong! Orphaned keys are not accessed by anything, so they're ignored…all they take up is about 42 bytes of disk space…that's it. Your machine does not read everything in your registry every-time you boot up, or any other time for that matter, so any orphaned keys left behind by poorly written uninstallers are simply ignored and only use up a few Kb's of disk space. Not worth hosing your OS for a few KB's is it.

If you insist on missing with the registry…

ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista Quickly (in seconds) makes complete backups of registry for easy restoration and comes with NTRegOpt that optimizes the registry, actually made my computer more reliable. Its better than system restore, and similar tools. it's worth keeping backups with it but hopefully wont need to use it..http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/ERUNT/erunt.html

This is so simple to use and definitely a MUST HAVE for all computers. Another nice point, is during the install process, you can select to auto backup the registry every time you load Windows (in case you forget to do it manually). Now that's reliable! Restore is so simple as well, go to the backup folder and select which date to restore from. Click on the exe file in that folder and presto! it's done. Truly a life-saver. Make Sure You Have It Before You Need It. This is the ideal replacement for the the bloated and resource hogging system restore feature in Windows. And Erunt always works. I Recommend This To All !!!

      Safe Security Tips…

As a computer user, you can avoid problems include viruses, spam, and spyware, by using simple safety precautions when you connect your PC to the internet. You can begin using the following security actions immediately.

When you download a file, Do Not select Run to install the program from the web. You should select Save and download the file to your hard drive. Then, before you install the program, run your anti-virus program to test the file. To test the file, right-click the file name, and select the Scan for viruses option.

To close a popup window in your web browser, click the large X in the upper right hand corner of the window. Do NOT select OK or Ignore or Close buttons within the advertisement, because you have no idea what action is performed behind the button. If there is no X on the pop-up or browser window, press the Alt-F4 keys to close the window.

Other then that.. you should be OK with what you have..
      Good Luck.
