yea! i know, it confused the crap out of me too. like he shot himself in the mouth at an angle that it would kill him but there wasnt a risk of killing himself. weird, i still dont get it

I think he either blew out the portion of his brain where he created tyler, or it was symbolic to himself, like an alcoholic smashing his last bottle of booze. Try reading the book, it's heaps better than the movie.
