How is Mozilla Firefox vs. Internet Explorer 7.0?

June 15th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I've always used IE7…but a job that I worked at used Firefox on their computers. How is the security of Firefox - is it equivalent to IE7, and is the speed of one any better between the two?
Oh yeah, and I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, if that makes any difference with Firefox.
I do all of my banking online, so the security is definitely very important, as well.

i have both. but i prefer mozilla firefox. i think its quicker and its has safety features that don't let viruses or spam attack your computer. plus its a very popular browser.
and i don't really know if it makes a difference that you have Windows Vista Home Premium. i don't think its shouldn't. but i don't know. all i know is that mozilla firefox is better.

edit: since you do banking on your computer and have all your passwords and personal info then mozilla is the way to go because it is secure and is most likely to block out all the scammers and hackers that try to get into your accounts.
also mozilla updates on its own and asks and gives you more options and more security options. and it has different applications, etc.

Mozilla is better in almost every aspect. If you don't like how it looks, you can just download another skin for it. Another plus is that it is faster than IE7. It also has a downloads feature, which saves all things you have downloaded or saved for future reference until you delete it, which is very nice. It has many, many, many download-able applications to increase with it's usefulness, along with the many that it already has. Some of it's features that are already built in include the tabs option, something IE finally caught on with, and spell check, something IE7 does NOT have. Firefox is more user friendly, and I find it to do a much better job than IE7. As for it's security, it is as good, if not better to IE7.

IE and firefox Are about the same security wise. IE is way faster than firefox and uses a lot less system resources and crashes less often too. Firefox is way overrated don't believe the hype about it.

One major improvement that Firefox 3 has over IE is the use of tags for bookmarks.

It's incredibly easy to set a tag for Yahoo! Answers for instance, set the tag to "ask". And every time you type "ask" in the navigation bar you're sent here.

      Incredible time saver.

There is really no tangible difference in speed between Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7. In fact, I think someone benchmarked them and measured IE7 to be slightly faster than Firefox on Windows. They're pretty much on equal footing security-wise as well. Historically, Internet Explorer used to be much worse, but this may have partly been achieved through "security by obscurity" - Firefox had such a small user base back in the day that it just wasn't feasible to write exploits for it.

I think a lot of the ill will toward Internet Explorer has its roots in the developer side, where Microsoft has been neglecting the developers of websites. There are standards issues and rendering differences compared to other browsers. However, none of this technical stuff is honestly going to affect your user experience in any way in the short term. Having worked with both browsers from that side, I would never recommend IE to anybody; still, you're used to what you're using, and it is your choice and nobody else's. ;)

Whichever browser you choose, you should remember that you are the single most important factor in online security - you should keep your plugins up to date and not download suspicious files or fall for phishing scams. It is not possible to secure a browser completely; both Firefox and IE will always have new security holes waiting!
