How long would it take to crack full drive encryption (AES)?

May 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

How long would it take a master hacker to gain access to my files if i have a full system drive encryption (AES).

I have important data on my computer that i cannot allow a hacker to get access to. I think my computer is secure with firewalls and AV software. If a hacker got into my computer i would just disable the internet.

Would a full drive encryption (AES) stop someone like a hacker or a theif who knows how to hack getting the files?

You need a password everytime you turn it on to decrypt the drive. Mine is 30+ characters. Upper and lower case. Special Characters and numbers and even a few acents on the letters é etc.

Please tell me how long this would take to crack.
Thanks (also suggest more security if possible)

You are safe. It would take a week or so on a supercomputer if they could crack it at all. No hackers have that kind of power.

For the general user, it's not possible to break AES256 without special software and major computer CPU power. I have been using PGP Desktop full disk encryption. It's a great product.

They have a feature that allows single signon so once you enter your PGP password it logs you into windows. It's fully XP/Vista soon to be MAC compatible. It's a bit expensive at 169.99 USD, but it is a great program.

I would also recommend CompuSec's product, which is free for personal use, if you can't/don't want to pay for a product.

Structuring the path to the drive can be more important than the encryption of the drive itself. Create a secure network by utilizing a PDC/BDC, (Primary Domain Controller, Back-up Domain Controller) with a one way trust system . Change your language and protocols, even your OS’s, I suggest multiplatform firewalls and a mechanism that can use passive IDS (Intrusion Detection) that, once triggered, can lock your black hat cold, and track and trace. Even though the drive is encrypted, once your system has been compromised, there are methods with which one can simply clone the drive and its contents, mirror your data, snatch it and crack it at the individuals convenience. It sounds like you wouldnt want that.

Cracking Is Old School, there is a method now that is called, backdoor cracking, which decrypts a code behind an encryption and makes an override code, therefore, cheating the encryption.
